Would you rather grow and contribute than to play it safe?

Are you placing certainty over growth and contribution?

If there’s something I learned from Tony Robbins, it’s the importance of sequencing your six human needs in a way that they support you on your own personal journey to fulfilment.

These needs are certainty, uncertainty, significance, love and connection, growth and finally, contribution.

Ultimately, we all share the same six needs and are driven by them. We are constantly seeking to meet these needs but what needs we value the most will make all the difference in how we experience our lives.

And in Tony’s Unleash the Power seminar last April, my ‘needs sequencing’ penny dropped.

I started understanding what was going on within myself and why I was feeling the way I did.

I finally understood why I left my well-paid corporate job.

I finally understood why I was looking for something new.

It made absolute sense.

My needs sequencing had changed.

And now, when I look back to last April, reflecting on this experience, it’s easy to share my three reasons why I left my job.

1.    I stopped enjoying my work

I remember the passion I had for my job. I loved it! I wanted to perform at the highest level, do the best possible job, and absolutely smash it!

But I started feeling I wasn’t growing anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I was equipping my tool belt for sure, but I felt like the direction I was going to was not leading to the destination I had in mind.

With this feeling, I knew I needed to look for growth opportunities somewhere else.

2.    I realised I had a bigger vision for my life

To be honest, for the past six years while in London I have placed a lot of emphasis on myself: learning, progressing, getting promoted, networking…none of this is wrong per se, but it is all to do with ‘taking’ if that makes sense.

I felt it was time for me to focus on others. I felt the urge to make a bigger impact, to help and serve others. To give. I knew that by doing this, I would also summon my greater genius.

3.    This was only one job!

I know how entangled we can get with our jobs…I’ve been there. When we feel like ‘If I leave this job it’s the end of the world and there’s nothing else left’.

Well, first of all, that’s obviously an illusion.

And I realised I’m more than one consulting brand. I have everything I need within me – and this thought freed me. I realised I have faith in myself and I would be ok. I felt certain about this.

And if none of the above was enough, I thought what would make the 80-year-old version of me happy. Roughly put, there were two roads I could take: I could either feel ‘Man I’m glad I stayed in that cubicle for three decades and so avoided massive crises’ OR ‘That was a h*** of a ride!’.

And if you choose the former, you’re lying to yourself.

True leaders place growth and contribution on top and act accordingly.

You are in charge of your own life. Whatever it is your heart desires, I suggest you listen to it. Don’t be afraid to make your own decisions.

Welcome on the journey
